The word Hatha is a Sanskrit word – Ha means “sun” and tha “moon”. The symbolic union of two opposites to bring balance.
Hatha also means “force” – referring to energy balanced and rising upwards from the practices of hatha yoga.
So through the physical practice of postures (asanas) and breath practices (pranayama) we purify, strengthen and open the body to help prepare the mind to become balanced.
In a typical Hatha class we will begin lying down to become aware of the body and breath, we will then do some preparatory postures leading to a ‘feature’ posture with a particular focus for the body, one week may be shoulder releasing and strengthening, another we could be focusing on hips. We will close with concentration/meditation and a guided relaxation.
The classes are for all levels so that postures are modified or varied depending on our unique individual requirements within a group class.
